Ashen Vale

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Ashen Vale is the kind of RPG you lose weekends to. You build a party of four, wander a quiet, overgrown kingdom, and fight through turn-based battles where positioning matters as much as raw stats. The writing leans into a sad, faded atmosphere, and the soundtrack carries a lot of the mood.

The crafting system is where it hooked us. Materials you pick up actually feed into gear you'll want, and the branching upgrade trees reward a bit of planning. Battles are readable — you can see enemy intent before committing — so defeats feel like your mistake rather than bad luck.

Everything runs offline, including the sizable save file, and the game never nags you to connect. On an older phone load times between zones are a touch long, but combat stays smooth. For a free-roaming RPG on a phone, it's remarkably complete.
