The best offline RPGs for a long commute
There's a specific pain in opening an RPG, getting into a fight, and watching it freeze because you lost connection in a tunnel. Offline RPGs solve that, and the genre on mobile has quietly gotten very good at it.
Ashen Vale is my current favorite for exactly this. Turn-based combat means you can pause between any two moves, which is perfect when your stop is coming up. The crafting gives you something to plan during the dull stretches of the ride, and the whole save lives on your device.
A few tips if you're starting fresh: dim your screen brightness to stretch battery, and don't rush the early crafting — the materials you ignore in the first hour are the ones you'll wish you kept later. Turn-based RPGs reward patience more than reflexes, so lean into reading enemy intent.
The common thread with the good ones is respect for your time. No daily login, no background timers, no nagging. You open it, you play, you close it. That's the whole appeal, and it's why these games survive a bad signal better than almost anything else.
