Puzzle games that don't waste your time

A bad puzzle game cheats. It hides the solution behind an obscure pixel, or it dresets your progress to make the game feel longer. A good one makes you feel clever, then gets out of the way.

Lantern Hollow is the one I hand to friends who say they don't like puzzles. Everything is logical — examine, combine, observe how the village reacts. When I got stuck, it nudged me instead of letting me rage-quit, and the solution always made sense in hindsight.

My rule of thumb for judging a puzzle game: if being stuck feels like my fault, it's good design. If it feels like the game is hiding something unfairly, it's padding. The best offline puzzlers consistently land on the first side of that line.

Keep a notepad app handy for the longer ones — jotting down clues beats re-checking rooms. And don't be ashamed to step away; a lot of these puzzles solve themselves after a coffee break.
